ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka is awarding a deal for build operate transfer (BOT) elevated expressway in the capital Colombo to China Harbhour Engineering Corporation, co-cabinet spokesman Udaya Gammanpila said.
A cabinet appointed negotiations committee had recommended that the Build Operate Transfer deal be awarded to CHEC after calling proposals in April 2021.
It is not clear whether the government will pay annuities to the BOT operator to supplement income.
Minister Udaya Gammanpila said he was not aware of the financing details but elevated expressway will be handed back to Sri Lanka after operating for 15 years.
In April Sri Lanka’s cabinet gave the go ahead to request for proposals to the 17.3 kilometre from New Kelani Bridget to Athurugiriya in two phases.
The second phase from Rajagiriya to Athurigiriya was put on a more careful environment study was it was planned over the capital’s most valuable remaining wetland eco-system in Thalangama. (Colombo/May26/2021)
