Sri Lanka bomber had been arrested and released before

ECONOMYNEXT – At least one suicide bomber involved in Easter bombings that killed nearly 300 people in Sri Lanka had been arrested by police over an earlier incident, but released on political pressure, ministers charged.

Highways Minister Kabir Hashim said a police probe into a radical group that had defaced Buddhist statues had led to several arrests but had been released on orders from higher authorities.

Hashim questioned whether there was political pressure to release the person.

He said one of his staff members was shot by an unidentified gunman for working against the vandals and was still in hospital.

Minister Rajitha Senaratne said a released person was one of the suicide bombers involved in the Easter Sunday attacks.

Sri Lanka said members of a radical Muslim group called National Thowfeeth Jama’th (NTJ) had carried out the attacks. (Colombo/Apr22/2019-SB)
