ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has bought Sinopharm vaccines from China at 7 US dollars each following the personal intervention of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, State Minister Channa Jayasumana said.
“President Rajapaksa wrote personally to the Chairman of Sinopharm and got vaccines at 7 dollars each,” Minister Jayasumana told parliament interrupting a speech by opposition legislator Mujibur Rahuman.
Rahuman asked the minister to reveal the price at which the first shipments had come.
Rahuman charged that Sri Lanka had bought Sinopharm at 15 US dollars when Bangladesh and Nepal had got them at 10 dollars each.
Sri Lanka has achieved a high level of vaccination with Sinoharm and is now giving a booster dose with Pfizer.
Minister Jayasumana said the State Pharmaceuticals Corporation had singed an agreement with Pfizer in January but they could only deliver from August.
As a result Sri Lanka had gone to other alternatives.
