Sri Lanka braces for floods, puts military on alert
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lankan authorities have placed the armed forces on alert to respond to emergencies like floods as water levels rose in several rivers with the onset of heavy monsoon rains.
Irrigation authorities have issued flood warnings and the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) landslide warnings covering seven districts, advising people to be ready to evacuate if the situation worsened.
The Department of Meteorology said heavy rainfall exceeding 150mm could be expected in some districts bordering the central hills.
President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe held separate meetings with disaster response officials, advising them to be ready for evacuations and to respond to people in distress with food and other provisions.
