Sri Lanka budget 2019 passes with 119 for, 74 against
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s budget for 2019 passed with 119 votes for and 74 against indicating that a number of opposition members did not vote.
Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera moved several changes to original budget proposals in the final committee stage.
Sri Lanka is heading for presidential elections later this year but Finance Minister Samaraweera had presented the budget with salary hikes for state workers and also a pension increase.
The budget was delayed after President Maithripala Sirisena appointed current opposition leader Mahinda Rajapaksa as Prime Minister in October and illegally suspended parliament. (Colombo/Apr05/2019-SB)
