ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka will appoint an expert committee to examine the chances of producing cannabis for export, President Ranil Wickremesinghe said presenting a budget for 2023.
“The possibilities of producing Triloka Wijayapathra purely for the purpose of exports will be examined for which an expert committee will also be set up,” he told parliament.
Triloka Wijayapathra is the sanskrit name for cannabis.
Cannabis was widely consumed in South Asia for centuries. It is used for cooking, medicinal purposes as well as for recreation.
Diana Gamage, State Minister for Tourism has been plugging the growing of cannabis for exports.
Former Health Minister Rajith Senaratne was also backing the growing of cannabis for exports.
Cannabis was included in 1925 Geneva International Convention on Narcotics Control. The Government of India at the time opposed it being included saying Cannabis was used since time immemorial and questioned the practicality of a prohibition being enforced.
Cannabis has been de-criminalized in many countries which originally pushed for it but it is still banned in South Asia. (Colombo/Nov14/2022)
The most comprehensive study saw no medical or health reason to ban it. BUT British Indian commercial interest wanted it banned so that factory, plantation and office workers will turn up for work on time
