Sri Lanka budget second reading passed with 119 votes
ECONOMYNEXT – The second reading for Sri Lanka’s budget for 2019 passed with 119 legislators in the 225-member assembly voting for it, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said.
There were 76 votes against.
Opposition leader Mahinda Rajapaksa, who led a so-called constitutional coup against Prime Minister Wickremesinghe in October, was also present in the chamber when the vote was taken.
The United National Party and their allies, the Tamil National Alliance and the CWC voted for the budget.
The JVP and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party’s ‘Joint Opposition’ faction led by Mahinda Rajapaksa voted against.
President Maithripala Sirisena’s faction was absent. Bankbenchers of Wikremresinghe’s UNP had threatened to cut President Sirisena’s funding if his SLFP faction voted against the budget. (Colombo/Mar12/2019-SB)
