Sri Lanka budget will not raise taxes, prices: minister
EconomyNext – Sri Lanka’s government will not raise taxes or prices of goods in its interim budget to be presented Thursday afternoon, Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne who is also Cabinet spokesman said.
"The budget will not increase taxes or prices," he told a news conference. "There’ll be nothing to burden the people. Instead we will give more relief to the public."
He said revenue will be raised by stopping all wasteful spending of the former regime and that money thus saved will be spent to give relief to the people.
However there are fears that higher salaries for state workers and lower tax revenues will lead to pressure on the currency and price rises.
