Sri Lanka capital faces run on cakes on Valentine’s Day
ECONOMYNEXT – A severe cake shortage gripped Sri Lanka’s capital Thursday ahead of Valentine’s Day celebrations, according to online retailers as well as pastry shops in and around Colombo.
City’s de luxe hotels announced they will not accept new orders until after Saturday. They were still try to bake enough to meet the huge Valentine’s Day demand.
Cinnamon Lakeside, Hilton, Kingsbury, Movenpick and Galadari had run out of cakes for delivery on Friday and orders had poured in beyond their capacity to deliver on time. The early birds paid anything between 4,000 to 8,000 rupees for a small cake.
The more moderately priced Fab and Bread Talk cakes were also unavailable by Thursday afternoon due to the very high demand, according to their posts online. A resident said he visited three stores of Fab before he could buy a coffee cake.
With shelves of patisseries empty, anyone hoping to win a heart through the stomach could be disappointed. However, the traditional gift of roses was more easily available this year.
A single rose in a box was quoted at about 1,080 rupees while a bunch of 100 went for an eye watering 23,050 rupees. (COLOMBO, February 13, 2020)
