Sri Lanka cement production, imports sharply up in 2016

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s cement production and imports were up 28.4 percent to 6.5 million tonnes by October 2016, from a year earlier, indicating a strong recovery in the construction sector.

Domestic production was up 17.5 percent (334,000 tonnes) to 2.24 million tonnes, central bank data showed.

Import were up 35 percent (1.1 million tonnes) to 4.2 million tonnes.

Growth in cement use points to a recovery in the construction sector.

In 2015, domestic production grew 21 percent to 2.28 million tonnes but imports fell 1.4 percent to 4.09 million tonnes. Total cement production and imports rose only 5.8 percent to 6.78 million tonnes. (Colombo/Jan31/2016)
