Sri Lanka constitutional council appointments delayed
COLOMBO (EconomyNext) – The appointment of three non-politician members to Sri Lanka’s newly set up body that will oversee the public service and police has been delayed till at least June 09, with parliament failing approve the nominees in a special session.
The parliament was adjourned after objections that the written consent of the nominees were not available.
Parliament would next meet on June 09.
There has been objections from some members of smaller opposition parties that they were not consulted in choosing the non-political members of the council.
Sections of the opposition also scuttled moves to appoint a majority of non-politicians to the council to de-politicize the public service and police.
