ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has locked down Adikarigama in South Kaluthara police area from 1800hours on April 24, the state information office said, as the country attempts to stamp out a Coronavirus surge with a suspected new Covid-19 strain that is taking the lives of young patients.
By 1930 hours 826 new cases were confirmed as authorities warned that a new wave was spreading and asked the public to stay at home, cancel celebrations and holiday trips.
Overnight four persons were confirmed as having died from Coronavirus including younger patients.
Doctors had warned that a possible new strain was causing severe symptoms which progressed fast into pneumonia in younger persons who appeared to have no underlying conditions.
An 18-year old female had died on April 21, 2021 from Covid pneumonia and heart failure while being treated at Hemas Hospital in Wattala.
A 35-year old male from Nittambuwa had died on April 21, after being transferred to Base Hospital Homagama from Minuwangoda Base Hospital. He had died from Covid pneumonia.
A 40-year old make from Pannipitiya had died on 23 April 2021. He was admitted to the National Hospital with fever and shortness of breath. He was transferred to Base Hospital Homagama. He died from septicemia and multiple organ failure.
A 71-year old female foreign returned had died on 23 April 2021. She was undergoing home quarantine when she developed a cough and shortness of breath and was admitted to Colombo South Teaching Hospital. She was then transferred to Kothalawala Defence Hospital. She had Covid pneumonia and had acute kidney and respiratory distress syndrome.
Sri Lanka confirmed 931 domestic cases on April 23 up from around 150 before the April traditional New Year. (Colombo/April24/2021)
