Sri Lanka court allows Jaffna power plant workers to return
COLOMBO (EconomyNext) – Northern Power, an independent power producer in Jaffna, in north Sr Lanka said its workers will return to work on Monday for essential maintenance following an order from the Court of Appeal.
Power workers were earlier barred from its premises in Chunnakham in the Jaffna peninsula over a case involving alleged contamination of ground water by oil effluents from the power plant.
The company insists that it sells waste oil for cash and does not dump it.
The firm also says there used be a large ‘oil lake’ at the premises of a state-run national grid which was later compacted with earth and the whereabouts of the oil is not known.
