Sri Lanka cuts age for Middle East housemaids to 21 years in currency crisis

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s cabinet of ministers has approved the reduction of the minimum age for females to depart to the Middle East as housemaids to 21 years from the current 23, Minister Bandula Gunewardena said.

“The cabinet approved the proposal by Foreign Employment Minister Manuusha Nanayakkara to encourage foreign remittances in the current currency crisis,” Minister Gunewarndene said.

At the moment the age limit for Middle East employment for housemaids and other work was 23 year and for other countries 21 years.

A cabinet sub-committee was appointed in June 06 to go into the matter under the Justice Minister.

The age limit was reduced following the recommendation of the sub-committee. (Colombo/June21/2022)

It has been bad enough for these victims of sex marketing, as our embassies in those countries have been guilty of neglect when it comes to safeguarding the maids due to forced attention on them by lecherous men. Some or most embassies only look to the interest of the recruiters.
