ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s President Maithripala Sirisena has taken a state television station into the defence ministry, giving it the responsibility to enhance entertainment quality of the people and boost national security with audio visual media.
President Sirisena removed state-run Rupavahini from the ministry of state for media, coming under Ruwan Wijewardene and placed it under the Defence ministry, by gazette notice.
The Ministry of Defence will now have the function of creating a ‘higher media culture’ though state-of-the-art technology,’ enhancement of the entertainment quality of the people’ and doing programs to promote peace and reconciliation while ensuring national security with audio visual media.
There had been a tussle over the appointment of senior officials at Rupavahini in recent week, sources familiar with the matter said.
Sri Lanka was plunged into crisis in October, when President Sirisena sacked Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and appointed ex-President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Prime Minister.
Though Wickremesinghe was re-instated, relations are strained. (Colombo/Sept10/2019)
