Sri Lanka eatery association says cutting tea, koththu prices to salute Rajapaksa: report

ECONOMYNEXT – An association of eatery owners which have been raising prices as a group in recent months have said they are cutting prices of key foods following a disputed appointment of Mahinda Rajapaksa as Prime Minister by President Maithripala Sirisena.

"Now there is a promising ambience," All Island Canteen Owners’ Association Chairman Asela Sampath was quoted saying on the Daily Mirror newspaper.

"We have complete confidence in the President’s decisions and the current Prime Minister’s vision.

The price of a plain tea was reduced from 20 rupees to 15 rupees. Prices of lunch packets (rice) and koththu, a popular fried mixed food made with wheat pancake has been cut by 10 rupees he said.

The All Island Canteen Owners’ Association had been raising prices in recent months, saying costs are rising. (Colombo/Oct30/2018)
