Sri Lanka Election Commission ready for poll, unless court orders otherwise: report

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Elections Commission getting ready to conduct a poll under a gazette notice issued by President Maithripala Sirisena unless directed by the Supreme Court not to do so, its chairman has said.

"I have to abide by the provisions of the law and prepare for the election unless directed otherwise on a Supreme Court order", Chairman of Sri Lanka’s Elections Commission Mahinda Deshapriya was quoted as saying in Sri Lanka‘s The Sunday Island newspaper.

Sri Lanka’s United National Party has said it will go to courts against dissolution of parliament on Friday which it says is illegal. Several public interest litigation cases are also expected.

Under an amendment brought to the constitution the President cannot dissolve the parliament until the lapse of 4.5 years.

The sacking of parliament and an earlier appointment of a new Prime Minister has thrown Sri Lanka into a political crisis. (Colombo/Nov11/2018)
