Sri Lanka election commission should fix new election date: PM
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has called on the country’s Elections Commission to fix a new date, after the original date in April was dropped with the spread of Coronavirus.
The PM said under Sri Lanka’s Parliamentary Elections law the Elections Commission is required to fix another day for the poll.
“They have no power to postpone the poll without fixing another date.Such mandatory legal requirements cannot be ignoredon the basis of speculation as to what may or may not happen weeks and months into the future,” he said.
“The Elections Commission should first fulfillits duties under Section 24(3) and thereafter take up for discussion any outstanding issues.”
Other political analysts however have called for parliament to be recalled and elections to be delayed until August when there elections would be free and fair and parties could campaign without the risk of igniting Coronavirus.
Prime Minister Rajapsksa also took a swipe at the last administration saying they had delayed provincial elections through various ruses. (Colombo/Apr18/2020)
