Sri Lanka electoral reform report to cabinet by May 20: Rajitha
COLOMBO (EconomyNext) – A ministerial subcommittee has been asked to provide a final report to the cabinet on electoral reforms to the cabinet by May 20, minister Rajitha Seneratne said.
President Maithripala Sirisena had discussed suggestion given by all parties to a proposal presented at the last cabinet meeting regarding a mixed system made up of the first-past-the-post system and proportional representation to ensure adequate representation of small parties.
Among the ministers are Sarath Amunugama, S B Dissanayake, Lakshman Kiriella, Kabir Hashim, Patali Champika, Gayantha Karunathilake, Rauf Hakeem, Palani Digambaran and Rishard Bathiudeen.
Minister Senaratne, said the intention was to pass the constitutional change as soon as possible. Whether the next election would be held under the new system or not would be decided later.
He said the current parliament will also try to pass the right to information act and audit bill before it is dissolved.
