Sri Lanka emergency cabinet meeting summoned

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s President Maithripala has summoned an emergency meeting of the cabinet Thursday Plantations Minister Navin Dissanayake said.

Asked whether the abolition of the Presidency would be discussed, he said it had been a longstanding demand of the people.

“There is a strong demand in the country to abolish the presidency,” Dissanayake told reporters. “Our party passed a motion at the 2014 convention to abolish the presidency.

“That is the official policy of the party.”

He said the upcoming Presidential election had to be held under the law.

He said there was a idea spread by some that a ‘strong man’ was needed, but the negative effects of such rule had already been seen.

“It is better go for a prime minister with parliamentarian system.”

Sri Lanka’s Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna is pushing for the abolition.

Karu Jayasuriya, one of the contenders for nomination under the UNP, has is also supporting the abolition. (Colombo/Oct19/2019)
