Sri Lanka ex-presidents brother Basil steps down; accepts responsibility for defeat
COLOMBO (EconomyNext) – Sri Lanka ex-president Mahinda Rajapaksa’s brother Basil has resigned as national organizer for the ousted coalition, saying he accepted responsibility for the defeat.
He said in a statement that he resigned on January 15 after "accepting full responsibility for the defeat of President Mahinda Rajapaksa" at the 2015 presidential elections.
The ex-President also lost the Gampaha district, his brother’s home constituency a traditional bastion of his Sri Lanka Freedom Party and birthplace of its founder SWRD Bandaranaike.
Bandaranaike daughter, who was claimed she was ousted unceremoniously out of the SLFP by Mahinda Rajapaksa was a key architect of his defeat.
Mahinda Rajapaksa is to also give up his party chairmanship today.
A nephew of Rajapaksa was ousted as chief minsiter of Uva province yesterday. Another brother remains as speaker of parliament.
Rajapaksa was defeated by his rivals amid allegations of corruption and nepotism.
