Sri Lanka ex-president’s son denied access to US

ECONOMYNEXT – Former president Mahinda Rajapaksa’s legislator son Namal has been denied access to the United States despite having a valid visa, he complained on twitter.

Namal Rajapakse said Emirates airline office in Moscow told him he will not be allowed to board a flight to Houston, Texas following instructions from US authorities.

Rajapaksa was in Moscow as an observer of the Russian Presidential elections won on Sunday by Vladimir Putin with 76 percent of the popular vote to rule the country for a fourth term.

"Emirates Air #Moscow informs I won’t make my Houston Flight as #US Officials instruct them to not let me board," Namal Rajapaksa said. "Valid reason yet to be received."

He was reportedly returning to Colombo unable to visit Texas where his uncle Dudley lives. Dudley’s wife Yatendra died on March 15 and her funeral was held on Tuesday.

Namal suggested that the US had denied him access because of status as an opposition lawmaker in Sri Lanka.

"US has the Sovereign right of course. Sure it has nothing to do with my name, being part of #lka opposition or my travel from #Russia ??," he said.

However, unofficial sources said Namal was most probably on a travel watch-list due to the pending money laundering charges against him. He is also currently on bail and had obtained permission from court to travel abroad. (COLOMBO, March 22, 2018)
