Sri Lanka expects stronger maize harvest in 2021 amid armyworm
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka maize farmers have sown over 96,000 hectares for the main (Maha) 2021 season which can produce up to 385,368 metric tonnes of grain, the Department of Agriculture said.
In the 2019 Maha season about 312,000 metric tonnes of maize was produced, with 77,993 hectares being cultivated.
Sri Lanka’s maize crop has been hit by fall armyworm from around 2019 and several mitigation procedures have been followed.
It is not clear yet how much of the crop had been hit by fall armyworm this season.
However by November about 1,624 hectares were infested.
In the minor Yala season in 2020 Sri Lanka was estimated to have produced about 52,000 metric tonnes of maize. (Colombo/Jan15/2021)
