ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has allowed Coronavirus hit firms to pay lower salaries till March 2021, provided workers are kept in employment, under a proposal approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
In 2020, following a meeting with trade unions, employer representatives and Ministry of Labour firms were allowed to pay 50 percent or 14,500 rupees whichever is higher to workers in several sectors until December 2020.
The Employment Provident Fund and Employees Trust Fund also have to be contributed in line with the payment made.
The cabinet had approved the scheme to continue till March 2021. (Colombo/Jan13/2021)
