Sri Lanka FACETS gem show to draw international buyers
ECONOMYNEXT – Gem buyers from countries like China, India, Russia and the United states are expected in Sri Lanka in September to attend the island’s annual FACETS gem show, officials said.
Held for the 25th year, the international gem and jewellery show during September 3-6 will have over 150 local and foreign exhibitors showcasing their gem and jewellery products.
"FACETS 2015 plays a big role in making Colombo a regional gem and jewellery hub and Sri Lanka the sapphire capital of the world," said Juzar Adamaly, chairman of the exhibition.
"We expect over 10,000 local and overseas visitors, including influential trade buyers and delegations from around the world."
Gems and jewellery are now among Sri Lanka’s top five export earners and the industry aims to have export sales of a billion dollars by 2016, Adamaly said.
Buyers are also expected from Thailand, Hong Kong and Switzerland, said M P N M Wickramasinghe, Director General, National Gem and Jewellery Authority.
Bandula Egodage, Chairman of the Export development Board, said the show will help small and medium enterprises reach international buyers.
"The focus is on SMEs, who form the backbone of the economy. Exporters start as SMEs and FACETS has created big exporters."
