Sri Lanka floods kill three, 40,000 homeless

COLOMBO (EconomyNext) – At least three people have been killed and nearly 40,000 left homeless following floods caused by north-east monsoon rains, the disaster management centre said today.

It said Anuradhapura district was the worst affected with nearly 11,000 people driven out of their homes as a result of flood waters.

About 8,500 people were affected in the neighbouring Polonnaruwa district, the home constituency of presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena.

One man drowned in Muttur in the Trincomalee district while two people were killed in a mudlside in Minipe in the Kandy district, the DMC said.
