Sri Lanka floods, landslides affect 11,000 people
ECONOMYNEXT – More than 11,000 people have been affected by floods and landslides caused by heavy rains and high winds in Sri Lanka, the disaster management centre said.
Water levels in major rivers had exceeded alert or minor flood warning levels, including in and around Colombo, it said in a statement.
The highest number of people affected were in the Colombo district, followed by the southern districts.
The Ministry of Disaster Management has appealed for the supply of mats, bed sheets and mobile toilet units for the displaced people.
The Asia Pacific Alliance for Disaster Management said these materials could be handed over to its local office as it was coordinating handing over of relief items.
