ECONOMYNEXT – Former President Maithripala Sirisena, whose Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) is increasingly at odds with the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), has declared his party’s intention to form a new government.

Speaking to reporters on Monday (10), Sirisena said a revitalised SLFP will soon put before the public a “broad, national programme”.

“In the coming months, we will build the SLFP as a strong and powerful party. We will present a broad, national programme to the country and invite others onboard.

“We shall form a government in the future with whoever joins us in this programme,” he said.

Commenting on a widely speculated decision to postpone Sri Lanka’s long-delayed provincial council polls by a year, Sirisena said his party will oppose such a move.

“We want elections,” he said.

Asked if the SLFP will lead this proposed future alliance, Sirisena said: “Yes, most a likely a new alliance will have to be formed. The old ones have expired.”
