Sri Lanka Freedom Party to back Gotabaya, President Sirisena to step down as leader
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka Freedom Party will support Gotabaya Rajapaksa for the candidacy and President Maithripala Sirisena will step down as party leader ahead of upcoming elections, a media report said.
Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa, head of the Mass Communications Department at the Kelaniya University will be interim chairman of the SLFP.
“The President has decided to step down temporarily as his functions as Minister of Defense may come in the way of the restrictions on the use of state resources during an election period,” RepublicNext, a news service quoted spokesman Weerakumara Dissanayake as saying.
The SLFP will sign two Memoranda of Understanding with Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the Sri Lanka Podujana Party.
SLFP legislators Duminda Dissanayake and Weerakumara Dissanayake are expected to speak at rallies held for Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Piyadasa had told RepublicNext.
There had been discussions between the two parties for several months with the President Sirisena insisting that the SLFP cannot back the flower bud symbol of the SLPP. (Colombo/Oct09/2019)
