Sri Lanka fruit exporters look for land to boost production
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lankan exporters of fruits and vegetables say they are seeking more arable land for cultivation to raise production since demand from foreign buyers is much more than what farmers can supply.
Demand is much more than what Sri Lankan exporters can supply especially from markets like Europe and China, said Annes Junaid, chairman of the Lanka Fruit & Vegetable Producers, Processors and Exporters Association.
“China wants a lot of our bananas, Russia wants large quantities of our fruits and vegetables,” Junaid said.
Exports volumes are good but there is not enough produce especially for the processed fruits and vegetables industry, he said.
The industry had asked the government to cultivate all available arable land to bring production volumes up.
