ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s fruit and vegetable producers and exporters have linked up with a World Bank supported project to modernize the cultivation of banana, papaya, pineapple and white guava for export.
Under the Agriculture Sector Modernisation Project (ASMP) of the Ministry of Agriculture aims to expand fruit and vegetable production with an export focus.
Commercial nucleus estates will be set up by commercial growners and know-how will be passed to the out grower farmers.
The Lanka Fruit and Vegetable Producers, Processors and Exporters Association (LFVPPEA) had inked a deal to join the project.
Modern pack houses will be set up to improve product quality and reduce post-harvest losses in the chosen fruits in districts where the project is running.
The LFVPPEA will link the producers with international buyers and exports will be done by seafreight. (Colombo/Dec22/2020)
