Sri Lanka general elections 2020 – LIVE UPDATES
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka Podujana Party of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is heading for a landslide in results declared so far in the 2020 General Elections.
In many polling divisions the SLPP has won around 70 percent of the vote. The Samagi Jana Balawegaya, which broke away from the United National Party is a distant second with around 20 percent of the declared vote.
Ex-Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s UNP has has polled from 1 to 3 percent.
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s Sri Lanka Podujana Party (SLPP) went to polls highlighting the success so far in containing the spread of the Coronavirus in the country.
The party has called for a two thirds majority.
Despite Coronavirus control economy has been hit by a fiscal stimulus involving tax cuts made before the crisis and monetary stimulus, which de-stabilized the rupee and triggered a credit downgrade. Severe import controls have been placed on an economy already weakened by the pandemic.
Sri Lanka’s economy has contracted 1.6 percent in the first quarter the state statistics office said, which is far less than what has been reported in other countries.
