Sri Lanka govt hikes allowance for differently-abled people
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s government will increase a monthly allowance given to differently-abled people to 5,000 rupees from 3,000 rupees now, with about 72,000 expected to receive the payment from 1 July 2019.
The Finance Ministry said in a statement it had allocated 4,350 million rupees in the government’s 2019 budget for the payments.
The increased allowance is part of government initiatives to build a caring and inclusive society, it said.
About 32,000 differently-abled people registered with the government get the 3,000-rupees allowance now.
Another 40,000 differently-abled people have sought registration.
