Sri Lanka govt to subsidise pepper growers after price fall
ECONOMYNEXT – The Sri Lankan government is to give pepper growers a subsidy of up to Rs150 a kilo to cushion the impact of the fall in international and local prices, a spokesman said.
The Cabinet of ministers approved a proposal by Primary Industries Minister Daya Gamage to declare a guaranteed price of Rs900 a kilo for pepper, spokesman Minister of Land and Parliamentary Reforms Gayantha Karunathilaka said.
The Rs150 subsidy will be given only until the pepper market price reaches Rs900 a kilo, he told a news conference.
