ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s President Ranil Wickremesinghe has had talks with China’s Finance Minister President Ranil Wickremsinghe has said while a delegation in Washington had also met bilateral creditors.
“The day before yesterday I talked with the China’s Finance Minister,” President Wickremesinghe told farmers and Sunday school kids in Siyambalanduwa, an agricultural area in the South of the island on October 16.
“Yesterday in Washington our State Minister talked to representatives of India.”
President Wickremesinghe said earlier he had visited Japan and discussed debt restructuring.
A Sri Lanka delegation headed by State Minister for Finance Shehan Semasinghe went to Washington for annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank where delegations of other countries are also present.
“So with the IMF and with representatives of these three countries we have started initial discussions,” he said.
“I am hopeful that these discussions will succeed.”
Sri Lanka is hoping to get initial agreement for debt re-structuring and get IMF board approval for a program by December 2022 or January 2023.
However IMF officials have said it is difficult to put a date. Debt re-structuring talks with China has taken some time in other countries. (Colombo/Oct17/2022)
