Sri Lanka has to be a neutral country: Gotabhaya Rajapaksa
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has to be a neutral country and that does not get involved in regional power struggles, presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa said.
“We have to be a neutral country,” Rajapaksa told reporters in Colombo Tuesday.
“We cannot get into the power struggles in this region among various countries.”
“I know that we are non-aligned country. Under the present situation, we have to be realistic. I propose to be neutral.”
Asked whether what his position was on the proposed and renewed agreements with the US such as ACSA and SOFA which may undermine any non-aligned status, he pointed out that nothing had happened after he had signed military deals with the US for 10 years.
“The benefit was for us, not for them. But the present one is a different matter.”
He said he was always for a sovereign independent nation and he will not do anything against the sovereignty of the country.
“Any government who wants to negotiate has to start with me.” (Colombo/Oct15/2019)
