Sri Lanka hires Rohde Nielsen to nourish tourist beaches
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has hired Rohde Nielsen A/S of Denmark to nourish two beach stretches subject to severe erosion which is important for the tourist industry, co-cabinet spokesman Ramesh Pathirana said.
The cabinet of ministers has approved the award of a 4.4 million Euro contract for beach nourishment, on a proposal submitted by the Minister of Environment and Wildlife Resources.
“The beach nourishment program will benefit the tourism industry,” Pathirana said.
Sand will be dredged from the deep sea to nourish a stretch of beach from Angulana to Mount Lavinia, and Calido beach in Kaluthara.
Sri Lanka’s Western Coast is usually subject to severe erosion while there is sedimentation in the East. (Colombo/Jan09/2020)
