ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has to implement unpopular tax decisions to go forward as lack of fiscal discipline was the main cause of the current economic crisis, Treasury Secretary Mahinda Siriwardena has said.
“Sri Lanka still in difficult situation. Sri Lanka should implement 2022 tax policies introduced in May and August,” Siriwardene was quoted as saying at an address to staff.
” The main reason for the economic crisis is weak fiscal policies. Lack of financial discipline was the main reason.
“But I am not saying it is the only reason.
Sri Lanka defaulted on foreign debt in April 2022 after taxes were cut and money was printed for stimulus. After two years of money printing, the rupee collapsed to 370 from 200 to the US dollar. Interest rates were raised to slow credit and stabilize the currency from April 2022.
The Finance Ministry was the main agency that had to implement policies of the government, Siriwardene had said.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe has also said that crisis was a result of not taking unpopular decisions. The decisions are not popular.
The correct policies were not new, but were well known.
“It is not unknown thing we have to do. We know them for decades,” he said. ” If we do not take these decisions, there are questions whether as a country we can go forward. There is an unborn generation. There has to be a country left for them.”
Sri Lanka has raised value added tax, introduced a new cascading turnover tax and also raised income taxes to boost state revenues. (Colombo/Jan02/2022)
