COLOMBO (EconomyNext) – Sri Lanka’s tea exports grew in volume in the first two months of 2015 but earnings fell, especially for tea bags where margins are better.
Tea exports in February grew by 1.2 million kilos to 23.5 million kilos from the same month in 2014.
But in value terms however total February revenue fell by 800,000 rupees to 14.3 billion rupees from a year ago, Forbes & Walker Tea Brokers said.
"Tea in bulk has shown a significant growth in volume whilst packeted tea and tea bags have shown a marginal decline," the brokers said.
On a cumulative basis too January – February 2015 total exports grew by 3.8 million kilos to 48.03 million kilos from the year before.
But earnings fell by 900,000 rupees to 29.3 billion rupees in 2015 from January – February 2014.
"On a cumulative basis bulk tea together with packeted tea has shown a growth whilst tea bags show a fairly significant decrease compared to the same period of 2014," the brokers said.
