ECONOMYNEXT – Attempts are under way to arrest Sri Lanka’s main opposition Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB) MP Harin Fernando, SJB MP Patali Champika Ranawaka said.
Ranawaka told parliament today that Fernando has been asked to appear before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
“What for? To arrest him, to oppress him. Not for anything else,” Ranawaka said.
On Tuesday (20), Fernando made a startling revelation in parliament of an alleged omission by the investigators of the 2019 Easter bombings. Throughout much of his speech, backbencher MPs of the government kept trying to interrupt and hurl abuse at him. The next day, a brawl nearly ensued between government and opposition members as some MPs attempted to physically assault him.
Referring to yesterday’s tense situation, MP Ranawaka said the government is afraid of the challenge posed by his colleague and others like him who are vocal about their criticism of the powers that be.
MPs within its own ranks have earned the wrath of the government, Ranawaka said.
“We know Harin Fernando is an active opposition MP. Anyone can see how active he is,” he said, adding that the government is hiding behind commissions and the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP)-led alliance’s majority in parliament.
“Anyone who they think will rise up against them, even from their own party, anyone who goes against the Rajapaksa family may come under attack. They’re using the commissions and their majority to silence opposition activists,” he said. (Colombo/Apr22/2021)
