ECONOMYNEXT – Canada beat Sri Lanka to win the online World School Debating Championship 2020, in a 8-1 decision by judges.
This is the first time Sri Lanka reached the finals. In 2020, 68 nations competed.
Sri Lanka was named the best team for a nation where English was a second language (ESL).
Shalem Sumanthiran won an award for being one of the top ESL speakers in the contest.
Students from Royal College, Colombo International School, Ananda College and Ladies College were the in the team.
The contest was to have been held in Mexico, but was held online due to Coronavirus.
The physical World Debating Championships had started in the late 1990s. It is held in English as it originated in English speaking countries but it has been won several time by countries where English is a second language. (Colombo/Aug02/2020)
