Sri Lanka nationwide inflation accelerates to 6.5-pct
ECONOMYNEXT – Nationwide inflation in Sri Lanka in January 2017 rose to 6.5% from a year earlier, edging up from 4.2% the month before, the Department of Census and Statistics said.
The National Consumer Price Index (NCPI) rose 1.1% to 119.3 index points in January 2017, a statement said.
“Year-on-year inflation of the food group reported for the month of January 2017 was 6.6% while that for the non food group was 6.5%,” it said.
"The reason for the increase in inflation was due to the comparatively lower price levels that prevailed in January 2016," the statement said.
"In January 2016 contribution to the inflation from food group was -1.9% and non-food group was 1.2%. Nevertheless, in January 2017 contribution to the inflation from food group and non-food group are 2.9% and 3.6% respectively."
