Sri Lanka nationwide inflation picks up to 4.2-pct in December
ECONOMYNEXT – Nationwide inflation in Sri Lanka in December 2016 rose to 4.2 percent in December from a year earlier, edging up from 4.1 percent the month before, the Department of Census and Statistics said.
The National Consumer Price Index (NCPI) rose 1.2% to 118 index points in December 2016, an increase of 1.4 index points compared to November, a statement said.
“This monthly change was due to the increase of expenditure value of food items by 1.25% and decrease of expenditure value of non-food items by 0.08%,” it said.
The NCPI Core inflation, which reflects the underlying inflation in the economy decreased marginally to 6.7 per cent in December 2016 from 6.8 per cent in November 2016, the statement said.
Annual average NCPI Core inflation increased slightly to 5.9 per cent in December 2016 from 5.8 per cent in November 2016.
