Sri Lanka new parliament to sit on August 20
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s new parliament will sit on August 20, after election on August 05, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has said in a gazette notice.
Sri Lanka’s was originally planning to have elections on April 25 and parliament was expected to meet on May 14.
But the Elections Commission had delayed polls to August 05, on account of the Coronavirus crisis.
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said he is summoning parliament August 20, under Article 70 (1) of the constitution.
Sri Lanka’s parliament was dissolved in March, and government spending has been made citing presidential authority without a parliamentary approval amid controversy. (Colombo/Aug04/2020)
