Sri Lanka new PM plans vote on account

ECONOMYNEXT – Gamini Pieris, Chairman of Sri Lanka Podujana Party of newly appointed Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said they were planning a vote-on-account after parliament was suspended until November 16 amid a political crisis.

The budget for 2019 was originally scheduled for November 05.

Pieris said they the parliament was suspended to allow for time to prepare a vote-on-account, a type of interim budget, while members of the United National Party of Ranil Wickremesinghe claimed the suspension was because the new PM did not have a majority.

Wickremesinghe has insisted that he is still the Prime Minister and his removal was unconstitutional.
