Sri Lanka opposition bigwig joins president Rajapaksa
Economynext – The general secretary of Sri Lanka’s main opposition United National Party, Tissa Attanayake crossed over to join President Mahinda Rajapaksa Monday as more than a dozen candidates file papers for upcoming polls.
Attanayake, who earlier said he was saddened by media reports that suggested he was being offered 500 million rupees to cross over was replaced by Kabir Hashim, the United National Party said.
The common opposition candidate Maithripala Sirisena was also the former general secretary of President Rajapaksa’s Sri Lanka Freedom party.
Jayantha Katagoda, another UNP legislator expressed support for President Rajapaksa.
Also on Monday Hirunika Premachandra, a member of a provincial council whose father was killed in a gun battle involving another party member crossed over to the opposition. (December 08, 2014)
