Sri Lanka opposition takes early lead in presidential race

COLOMBO (EconomyNext) – Sri Lanka’s joint opposition candidate took an early lead in a presidential polls with about 6 percent of the votes counted, results released by the elections office showed.

Opposition candidate Maithripala Sirisena polled 56 percent of over 600,000 valid votes with incumbent president Mahinda Rajapaksa taking about 41 percent.

Polls monitors say about 75 percent of 15 million electors have voted.
