COLOMBO (EconomyNext) – Sri Lanka’s parliamentary speaker has given the nod to debate a report on a report on a controversial auction of Treasury bonds that benefitted a firm connected to the son-in-law of the island’s central bank governor.
Though the Speaker on Wednesday did not entertain a motion of no confidence against Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran, saying the correct procedure was for a parliamentary committee to report on the matter giving the Governor a chance to defend himself.
Opposition legislators said Wednesday they wanted a debate on a report on the Treasury bond auctions prepared by a committee appointed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe and not on the original request.
The speaker gave the nod for the request.
