Sri Lanka parliament elects Karu Jayasuriya as speaker
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s parliament has appointed Karu Jayasuriya, a senior legislator from the United National Party as the Speaker was elected speaker unanimously.
Jayasuriya’s name was proposed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and seconded by Nimal Siripala de Silva form the main opposition.
Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said the parliament faced a challenge in consensus based politics.
He said a number of reforms involving the setting up of executive committees to oversee ministries, district development boards, a parliamentary research office and a budget office would be set up.
De Silva, who was former opposition leader said the election of the speaker unanimously was a positive development.
He said under a memorandum signed between the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and the United National Party, electoral reforms to end preferential voting are targeted to be completed in a year. Thilanga Sumathipala was elected uncontested as Deputy Speaker. (Colombo/Aug31/2015)
