Sri Lanka parliament to debate political situation
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s parliament will debate the current political situation Monday, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said following a meeting of party leaders.
An adjournment debate will take place after normal business from 4.00 pm to 7.00 pm he said.
The continuation of a coalition between President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has been hit by uncertainty following defeat in local council polls.
Dinesh Gunewardene, from a group of legislators backing ex-President Mahinda Rajapaksa requested the debate.
Gunewardene said after statements from the United People’s Freedom Alliance and Sri Lanka Freedom Party were carried in media saying they had pulled out of a coalition, the coalition was no longer in existence, and ministers had no standing.
Speaker Jayasuriya said he had not been informed in writing of any decision to end the coalition.
